Micro-Channel Heat Exchangers

Mezzo uses its advanced micro-manufacturing technology to fabricate high performance heat exchangers for aerospace and defense applications.  Our advanced heat exchangers are lighter, smaller, more energy efficient, and offer better performance than commercially available compact plate-fin heat exchangers, as well as other types of compact HX.

Why use Micro-Channels?
  • High Heat Transfer Coefficient
  • High Surface Area Density
  • Low Pressure Drop

The building blocks of Mezzo heat exchangers are micro-channel panels, which can be made in a variety of configurations, adjusting channel dimensions and panel size.

To the right is a typical panel with a thickness of between 1-5 mm, and the frontal area of 15 cm x 10 cm.  One stream flows through the inside of the panel, and the other stream flows through the smallest dimension of the panel through slots.  These gas slots are typically 250-400 microns wide and 2000-8000 microns long.

Performance

The performance improvements offered by Mezzo heat exchangers have been repeatedly demonstrated as evidenced by the three charts below.

In this example, two heat exchanger configurations comprising Mezzo micro-channel panels, such as the one pictured above, are compared to a range of commercially available compact plate-fin heat exchangers.

Charts 1 & 2 show the Mezzo heat exchanger provides comparable performance with similar frontal area and pressure drop. Chart 3, however, shows that Mezzo panels perform 5-10 times higher than commercial systems with regard to heat transfer per unit volume.

Mezzo’s heat exchangers utilize multiple panels in series and/or parallel configurations.  The final core design depends on constraints imposed by space for the heat exchanger package, thermal load, frontal area, total volume, and maximum pressure drop.

Because the panels serve as structural members for the assembly, there is no need for the substantial mass required by traditional plate/fin competitors for structural support.  Traditional plate/fin exchangers require additional mass for both stability and mounting the exchanger to the complete system.  The panel cores typically comprise 90% of the total weight of a packaged Mezzo heat exchanger.
